Persian Rugs Care
A good quality carpet that has been selected in accordance with your lifestyle and needs will be easy to care for. Most Persian carpets are designed with colours and patterns that are very practical for daily use and will not show dirt easily. Afterall, in Iran, families are generally large and carpets are subjected to a lot of use.
To properly care for a woolen carpet, you only need follow these simple steps:
1) Vacuum regularly, being careful to avoid the fringes (run the vacuum perpendicular to the fringes so they are not taken into the beater bar).
2) Clean any spills or accidents as quickly as possible using cold water and a clean cloth. Begin by working the cloth along the nap of the carpet to take up as much of the staining substance as possible. Then pour clean, cold water on the mark and dab up the excess, again working with the carpet's nap. Repeat this process until the stain is lifted. As a final step, scrub vigorously in all directions for just a few moments in order to refresh the nap. For help with a stubborn stain, give us a call.
3) Have your carpet professionally cleaned as necessary; generally once every 5-10 years. You can bring it to us (or we will pick it up and deliver it to you) when the time comes.
4) Between cleaning you can freshen up your carpet using either of these methods.
a) In the winter time, place your carpet upside down in a clean patch of snow. Beat the back of the carpet to knock the dirt out. Carefully lift the carpet onto a fresh patch of snow and drag for a couple of feet in the direction of the nap. This really works well! It is how people have cleaned their carpets for centuries in northern Iran and Europe.
b) Dampen a cloth with a diluted solution of vinegar and wipe the pile of your carpet. This lifts any surface dirt and grime and deordorizes your carpet. The colours will look bright and fresh.
5) Keep your carpet safe from moths. Moths like cool, damp, and dark places. This is why we recommend that your carpet not be placed under furnishings with low legs.
Silk carpets are a little more finicky to care for because silk shows water stains. These are our recommendations for caring for your silk carpet:
1) Place in a lower-traffic area, such as a bedroom, private study or low-traffic living room.
2) Vacuum as needed, again taking care to avoid the fringes
4) Again, when the time comes, bring it to us for professional cleaning. And if you do have a small stain you want to remove, please call us to help you.
3) Although silk water stains, do not have your silk carpet dry cleaned!
